Vikings were warriors and explorers. Ancient poets refer to Viking shields as circles, thus we know they used a round shield for protection in battle and as protection from waves when they were at sea. All free Norse men were required to own weapons and were permitted to carry them at all times. The style and decoration on their weapons indicated a Viking's social status.
